Planning Your Trip: Get The Best Deals!
Airbnb
Airbnb is undoubtedly one of my Best Travel Apps! Sometimes you just want to get away, but can’t afford to stay at expensive hotels…
With thousands of home listings around the world, Airbnb makes it possible to travel on any budget! From Lamu, Kenya to Vienna, Austria, there’s something for everyone… 🙂
And now, with Airbnb Experiences you can also find amazing things to do that are hosted by locals.

Travel Tips:
- Use Filters like home type, amenities, facilities to get very specific accommodation options.
- If possible, choose a super-host. They usually have the best reviews.
- Find out in advance whether a Chef is included in your deal, and save yourself the trouble of cooking while on vacation. 😉
Trip Advisor
I think what makes Trip Advisor one of the Best Travel Apps out there, is the millions of user reviews from people like you and me…
Sure, you can use Trip Advisor to find great deals on hotels and compare airfares, discover and book fun things to do… But it is the sincere reviews that really tell you whether these deals are worth it or not.
After all, a candid review can make all the difference between a good and insane trip, right? 🙂
Travel Tips:
- Get feedback to your specific questions from other travelers, on their Trip Advisor Forum.
- You can use the ‘Trips’ feature to create a draft itinerary by saving your favourite travel ideas, to view on a map.
Skyscanner
The Skyscanner App scans numerous sites to find you the cheapest deals on flights, car rentals and hotels.
And their explore page offers you abundant possibilities and suggestions like ‘quick getaways, honeymoon destinations’ all with prices to refer and compare.
Tip: You can get alerts when any of the prices on your items of interest drop, so keep your notifications on. 😉

Directions and Navigation Apps
Africa: Live
Our beautiful continent of Africa is known for the greatest Safari experiences… But, have you ever been on a game drive for hours, and failed to spot any of the Big 5? It can be super frustrating. 🙁
On my last visit to the Nairobi National Park, we got hopelessly lost, and missed the lions completely! Yikes.
Thankfully, Africa: Live is designed to help you find more animals on a Game Drive. Their Game Drive Maps help you to find exact locations & ‘hot-spots’ for different wildlife.

Travel Tips:
- Use the offline maps when in areas with limited network coverage.
- Try their saved audio field guide feature, for more information about the sightings.

Managing Your Money…
XE Currency
Do you ever find yourself trying to make mental conversions, whenever you’re in a foreign country?
I think it’s perfectly normal to ensure you’re not getting ripped off… But it can be quite stressful, especially when the Exchange Rate is not a round figure, yes? 🙂
XE Currency App allows you to make conversions on the go, by providing dependable World Currency Exchange Rates. This way you can manage your travel budget and avoid getting conned.

Splitwise
When traveling with friends, you’re prone to make joint purchases and payments… Keeping track of who-spent-what can be tricky, and you’ll want to avoid a falling out over money.
Enter Splitwise… 🙂 This App allows you to track shared expenses and bills, making it easier to split the costs when you get back home.
Add your friends or create a destination-specific group in advance, to help you mutually keep track of expenses on the go.
Furthermore, Splitwise sends friendly reminders when you forget to pay someone, taking the hassle out of following up. 😉

Learn the Local Language
Google Translate
Have you ever been to a foreign country where English is not commonly spoken? It can be pretty scary, especially when things get lost in translation…
One time in Kampala, I nearly missed my bus because the bodaboda (motorbike) guy did not understand English, and took me to the wrong bus stop! *Story for another day…* 🙂
To bridge such language barriers, the Google Translate App translates between 103 languages. And all you have to do is type in a sentence, while Google does the rest. You can even take a picture of a word, to get its translation.
They still have some ways to go with so many Native languages of the world, but it’s a start. 🙂
Travel Tips:
- Download an offline language file, if you anticipate low network or to avoid roaming charges.
- Although some of their pronunciations sound off, this App could easily be your lifesaver in a new country. 🙂

Duo Lingo
Duo Lingo is a fun, free way to teach yourself a foreign language. It’s very simple, and you’ll learn the basic words and phrases, that may come in handy when visiting a new country.
It doesn’t have as many languages, but it’s worth a try. 🙂
Your Health Is Your Wealth…
Calm App
Traveling can easily throw off your sleep patterns… And sometimes, you just need to feel centered.
The Calm App features sleep stories and short meditation series that will fit easily into a busy travel schedule.

Keeping fit while traveling is a whole challenge in itself! I like this App because the exercises are available offline.
It allows you to choose a part of the body you wish to focus on, and provides daily exercises for 30 days.
