International Women’s Day 2023: Embracing Equity

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #EmbracingEquity. Honestly speaking, when I first heard about it, I immediately thought about Gender equality.

However, after some research, I have come to understand that there is a difference between equality and equity. So, let’s get into it for a minute, shall we? πŸ™‚

Equality means that each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities. On the other hand, equity recognises that each person has different circumstances (+needs), and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.

Embracing Equity means acknowledging that not all people are starting from the exact same place, and that some have an advantage over others. The goal of equity, is therefore to distribute resources and treat people according to their individual needs, with a view to creating equal outcomes…

Hence, as we celebrate and mark the International Women’s Day, let us take the time to think of ways in which we can embrace equity in our homes, workplaces and social situations.

And, I tip my hat off to my fellow women around the world. You are beautiful; you are worthy; you are enough. You are making a difference for this and future generations. Keep on! πŸ™‚
