Muthu Sovereign Suites: Your Perfect Day-Pass Out of Nairobi!

A Nod From The Universe and Packing Woes…

“I need a holiday…” I texted my younger sister Shiku a few weeks ago, to which she replied: “Same!”

Little did we know that the universe was working in mysterious ways to bring us just that…

Not long after, Mercy from Muthu Sovereign Suites reached out with an invite to visit for the weekend. I was thrilled, to say the least! I promptly called up my sister who, thankfully, was available to come along. :)

The day finally came, a warm Friday in September… And there I was attempting to pack; I couldn’t quite decide what to bring and what not to bring. It had been a while, so I was feeling a little like a fish out of water.

I called up my sister, hoping she’d give me some clues on this packing business. Like me, she was also feeling bamboozled by the whole thing… When it comes to packing, it’s really the short trips that get you!

We agreed to pack warm things because the Limuru weather tends to be quite chilly. On hanging up, I removed everything from my suitcase in an attempt to “pack smart.”  Needless to say, everything made it back… into an even bigger suitcase! :)

And when she came round to pick me up, we both burst out laughing at how big our suitcases were. Ah, but such is life! :)

Enter Muthu Sovereign Suites Limuru… A Heritage Hotel!

The drive up to Muthu Sovereign suites was short and breezy… I enjoyed watching as the trails of city life rapidly disappeared behind us and sprawling Limuru tea farms started to take their place…

Soon enough, our Google Maps’ guide aka ‘Samantha’ announced that we’d arrived… The property is right on the road, making it a hard one to miss.

As the gates opened into Muthu Sovereign Suites, I noticed the green lawns and the stately building standing majestically to one side.

The Big Question… Vintage Vs Modern?

Established in 2012, Muthu Sovereign Suites is about 13 years old. However, the original building was first built in 1995. The hotel sits on 6 acres piece of land, and features about 30 rooms- a mix of 14 colonial-style vintage rooms and 16 modern well-appointed rooms. 

They also have an expansive swimming pool, a restaurant with indoor and outside seating space on the terrace, as well as a spa and gym.

We ventured into the main building, a place that looked like State House from the outside, and a grand family home from within…

The first moments of our stay felt like a blur, thanks to some confusion about our room… Thankfully, this was sorted out when the Manager, Mr. Acharya gave us a warm friendly welcome and introduced us to Edna who was to take us around. 

Edna was patient and kind, allowing us to take our time before making a decision on which room option to choose.

As we looked around, we discovered that the main building houses the vintage part of the hotel… Furnished with wooden floors and roofing, the rooms though dated, are spacious with plenty of wardrobe space.

The wooden furnishing makes them well-suited for the location as it helps with keeping warm. Meanwhile, the new wing rooms have much a more modern look and finish, with newer amenities…

Although a difficult choice to make, the idea of keeping warm won us over. Hence, we opted to go with a vintage room.

A Lovely Night Of Delectable Proportions…

As the evening settled in, so did the famous Limuru cold in equal measure. We opted to sit at their indoor restaurant for dinner.

It was quiet and softly lit up with chandeliers, in a way that made it feel like we were the only people there.

And as it turned out, the restaurant quickly became our favourite place at the hotel! There, we met Moses our kind server who was amazing at recommending what dishes to have.

That night, I ordered the Grilled Fillet Steak with roasted potatoes, while my sister Shiku, who is a big pasta lover, went for the Chicken Alfredo Pasta. And my goodness, the food was simply delectable!

That feeling was especially cemented when I got a taste of my sister’s pasta… I felt a steady warmth in my mouth that gently spread through my whole being, like a mother’s loving hug. It felt like love itself had erupted in my mouth. Oh so amazing! :)

Slow, Relaxing Days spent well… 

The next day, we woke up to a bright and sunny day in Limuru… I couldn’t help thinking to myself- who knew such sunny days existed in cold Limuru? :)

We made our way to breakfast, where we were greeted by a very warm and jovial Stephen. Something about his honest smile as he took our orders made our day feel livelier! 

When the food came, the breakfast spread was generous and delightful!

Shiku and I spent the morning there, allowing ourselves to slow down and be in the present moments. It felt like time had slowed down, just for us. 

The Manager, ever clothed with a kind and reassuring smile, constantly checked up on us and the other guests, making us feel well at home. :)

Activities: A Day-Pass At Muthu Sovereign Suites Is Why You Should Come…

Just before lunch, we decided to explore the rest of the hotel, and try our hand at mini-golf.

We had absolutely no idea what we were doing… There were no rules except trying to sink the ball- at any cost! And though their mini-golf course is quite small, we had such fun, being silly and laughing at ourselves! :)

As the day went on, we noticed more guests spilling into the hotel- families, couples, people relaxing in the gardens and by pool while taking pictures… I remember thinking to myself- they must know something we don’t. Then it all started to make sense…

Muthu Sovereign Suites has an all inclusive Day-Pass that allows you to visit and enjoy the hotel’s amenities for an entire day every, Saturday and Sunday… It’s brilliant really!

Limuru is easily accessible from Nairobi, meaning that you can have yourself a getaway for a day, without breaking the bank… And after our splendid experience of the restaurant, I would definitely recommend you try their day pass. :)

I reckon that this is a great way to check out the property for yourself, and make a decision whether you’d want to return for an overnight stay.

• The day-pass runs from 8am to 8pm and is inclusive of 3 meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner
• You get complete swimming pool access for the day
• You also get a selection of beverages both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks
• It costs Kes. 4,500/- pp for adults and Kes. 2,500/- for children

When it’s all said and done… all worth it!

Looking back at our experience, I think my favourite part of being at Muthu Sovereign Suites was spending quality time with my sister while sampling their amazing restaurant menu! :)

And I would be remiss if I did not give an honourable mention to this specific meal that we had for lunch on one of the days at Muthu Sovereign Suites…

Have you ever had a meal, and thought- this dish was definitely made with love? This is truly how we felt during that lunch!

My sister Shiku had the grilled lamb chops with mashed potatoes, while I had the grilled lamb chops with mint sauce and fries… And let’s just say, if vacation calories do count- every single bite was worth it! :)
